The Origins of Stock Trading
The Origins of Stock Trading in the US About 200 years ago, the colonial government was looking for ways to fund the war effort. The government decided to sell bonds and government bills to the public, promising to pay a profit later.
As the government raised large sums of money, private banks and financiers saw the great potential of the business model on the sideline and decided to join. They began to sell their stock to the public as an investment, the idea of selling stocks began to take root. In Europe, however, they were a little ahead of the competition, with the first shares being sold by the Dutch East India Company in 1606, when the first shares were issued on the Amsterdam stock exchange.
