What is a leadless crystal?

When most people think that high-grade crystal, they will consider the traditional lead crystal, such as a wonderful, a little heavy feel of the wine glass, and lovely, singing bells, when you click It resonates. That kind of glass for a long time, only the lead crystal produced these superb attributes. Although the lead is still very popular, but another type of high quality glass can provide the same experience

ordinary glass

"ordinary" glass, such as typical water glass, beer glass, Glass baking pan, etc., is the so-called soda-lime glass. Not particularly brilliant or beautiful, but the function, in most cases more durable than the crystal. Soda-lime glass consists of several major components – sodium carbonate, lime, dolomite, silica and alumina, and other components called "clarifier". These ingredients are melted together in a furnace at very high temperatures. The molten liquid is a bit so that its bubbles get up from it – this is called "clarified". Depending on the purpose of the final product, glass, window glass, windshield, etc., using different processes to form the glass. In the case of conventional crystals, lead is added.

Lead Crystals

Traditional lead-crystal glass adds another component to conventional glass blends – lead oxide. The addition of lead produces several unique properties that make the glass "crystal". Soda glass contains no structure of the molecules – the so-called amorphous. There is no specific order, but tightly tied together to make soda-lime glass more durable. The molecules in the lead crystals have a distinct three-dimensional sequence. These molecules produce sparkling glory in the glass. The crystal has a higher "refractive index" than ordinary glass, the higher the index, the more brilliant. The addition of lead glass also allows it to melt at a lower temperature and absorb less energy than sodium glass.

Lead-Free Crystal

Although the lead-line purists may have used it all the time, there is now a substitute with the same characteristics. This provides a choice for those who enjoy high quality crystals but are concerned about any lead content containing consumables. This is mainly related to decanter, I will introduce a little bit. When manufacturing lead-free crystal glass, lead is replaced by barium oxide (BaCO 3). The introduction of barium oxide produces a glass with a higher refractive index, followed by a greater brightness. Barium oxide Also lighter than lead oxide, the glass lighter has the same durability. For those who are concerned about the lead content of crystal glassware, as mentioned earlier, it is only a health problem with crystal precipitators. The reasons for wine and spirits are usually kept in a decanter longer than a glass of wine. This will result in a larger time window, which may lead to leaching. I personally will not store the wine in a very long time – it's more about aeration and introduction to me – so I do not care about this problem.

[1945900] Lead Crystal with Lead-Free Crystal

This is really just a matter of personal preference, whether you want to choose one. There are several high-end crystal manufacturers to create exquisite lead-free crystal. I have been widely used, the only real difference is that I noticed the change in weight. Whichever way, the wine in the high quality crystal glass taste better than the average daily drink cups

Cheers!
